Artist’s Statement: The title for this exhibition came about through the amazing process of working with eco colour*, which involves using plant materials to print or dye natural fibres. Everyone engaged in eco colour has their favourite plants, and it has been a fascinating experience discovering the different colours that emerge from the same plant – these differences happen for various reasons – sometimes it’s the change of season, sometimes the dye pot you use, and sometimes it’s a mystery! That’s what I love, never really knowing what is going to appear – what secrets the plant is going to reveal this time.
I hope you enjoy the outcomes as much as I did making them.
*India Flint in her book describes eco colour as “botanical alchemy….ecologically sustainable plant-dye methods using renewable resources and attempts to take the path of doing the least possible harm to the dyer, the end-user, and the environment”. (All prices are in NZ$) |
