"Nests
and Nuances" by Lois Morgan |
|
Artist's Statement I have been a beachcomber since the day I was first plonked on the sand at Takapuna Beach in 1945, and have always loved observing what the sea does to driftwood - the relentless washing away of bark revealing the twists and turns beneath in the shape of the wood, and the artistic possibilities presented. Nests have also fascinated me, especially since finding the nest of a very arty bird on the ground at my home last year. This nest had features purely for satisfying its inspired creator - a spiky haphazard arrangement of elongated twigs poking out precariously from the nurturing and homely inner, possibly some sort of 'twiggy viewing platform' allowing Mother Bird a break from the kids now and again.. Clearly this bird was onto her next project already, but was seeking recognition for what she had achieved so far, from the arty human whose tree her family had been occupying. It got me started on arty nests. This little show, for the most part, combines these two things, nests and driftwood, in a playful way The 'nuances' are there for the viewer to discover - subliminal things perhaps, speaking of shelter and home, and the importance of art to nest makers.
